Reading 7 and 8

During second semester, students will complete selected readings independently at school. Readings are selected by the teacher based on the results of testing. Students will have a choice when several pieces are available within the student's reading range. The purpose of reading during second semester is to prepare students for the independent reading of assigned pieces for school by applying the reading strategies and skills they have been taught. Students will complete a reading log, and a word study and/or decoding log as they read to help them review prior to testing. When finished, students will take three tests: Reading Practice, Vocabulary, and Literacy Skills. Students are required to read at least one book each six week period and should strive to reach a proficiency of 80% or better on each test. Grades will be based on testing scores as well as completion of the reading log and word study/decoding log. Literature tests, quizzes and assignments will be given during language block time, but will count toward the reading grade. The final exam will come from literary material presented on short stories and the novel during the language block class.

Home Practice: Below is the home practice for the next assessment. Print both the Home Practice and the Student Reading page for practice. The student will need a practice partner to make corrections and sign the calendar. Students may practice spelling and vocabulary using their Quizlet accounts, but an adult should monitor practice before signing the calendar. (Fluency, pseudowords and rules must be practiced with a partner.) Print the calendar below and collect five signatures for each practice session per week from your practice partner. Show the calendar to Ms. Hepler on Thursdays to receive full credit.(Note: Students may require more than five practices per week to reach goals. This has to be determined by the adult practice partner.)
