Professional Outreach
Professional Development: Members of The Bodine School faculty share their expertise at state and national conventions and are available to provide teacher in-service to area schools.
Teacher Training: The Bodine School supports elementary teacher training through its participation in the SMILA teacher training institute. At this institute teachers are taught a simultaneous, multisensory approach to the teaching of reading which is particularly beneficial for beginning readers and students at risk for reading failure. For more information regarding this institute, contact Rosemary Williams at (901) 754-1441 or download the summer brochure. For research related to what expert teachers of reading, should know, and be able to do, download the "Teaching Reading IS Rocket Science" article.
Workshops: The Bodine School also sponsors teacher workshops featuring nationally recognized authorities in their fields as well as Bodine faculty members. Past workshops have featured Michelle Gallegos instructing teachers on the six traits of writing, Dr. Nancy Cushen White speaking on extending the Slingerland approach, and Wilson Anderson who offered teacher training for secondary teachers. On September 26, 2009, the Bodine faculty presented a workshop entitled: "Strategies to Help Struggling Readers".
Conferences: Several of the faculty are presenters at the 2010 RISE Conference sponsored by the Tennessee Branch of the International Dyslexia Association.
