Elementary Program
The elementary program (grades 1-5) spends the entire morning in language arts instruction and remediation using the SMILA approach, a multisensory, sequential language arts program. The language arts program is supplemented through the use of such programs as Lindamood-Bell, Language!, Great Leaps, Words Their Way, Shurley Grammar, Easy Grammar, Accelerated Reader, and a variety of writing and phonological processing programs. Novel studies are used to develop comprehension skills and reinforce word recognition strategies.
Saxon Math is used for the teaching of math skills. Science and social studies instruction incorporates both hands-on/experiential and text based skills. Students also attend the following special classes: art, library, physical education, music, science lab, and computer technology. All elementary teachers are trained in Orton-Gillingham techniques and consult with a language arts specialist on a weekly basis. Students are in self-contained classrooms with a maximum student/teacher ratio of 10:1.
